WHAT DID MILTON FRIEDMAN THINK CAUSED THE GREAT DEPRESSION? AND OTHER FRIEDMAN TRIVIA ( Part One)

Nolan Gray, Kat Hall, Jim Pagels

“What did Friedman think caused the Great Depression?” 1

We didn’t think anyone would be able to answer this question at Atlas Network's Milton Friedman Trivia Night, but some people did. Can you?? (See answer below.)
This and many other questions were the subject of the Atlas Network’s third annual Milton Friedman Trivia Night, held in conjunction with the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice in celebration of Friedman's would-be 103rd birthday July 31.

On Thurs., July 30, contestants tested their knowledge on Friedman’s life, economic policy, and legacy while onlookers cheered. Since Friedman is a hero of the Chicago school of economic thought, attendees enjoyed Chicago-style pizza and drinks while pondering questions like:

“What did Friedman think are the three legitimate roles of government?” 2

“Which U.S. President awarded Friedman with the Presidential Medal of Freedom?” 3

A member of the economic policy team at economics21 gave a brief presentation about recent advances in the school choice movement, an issue about which Friedman wrote and spoke extensively. Trivia was divided into multiple rounds and ended with a debate round between the two leading teams on the topic of school choice as well.
