Bomb blast: Heavy patrol, checks in Maiduguri

From TIMOTHY OLANREWAJU, Maiduguri
Security forces yesterday intensified patrol within and around Maiduguri metropolis in Borno State, following twin bomb explosions at a military checkpoint located at the outskirts of the city.
Suicide bombers suspected to be Boko Haram members were said to have rammed their cars into a military checkpoint around Mule, near the NNPC Mega Station on Damboa Road, killing unspecified number of people. Residents said that both civilians and military personnel may have been affected.

The development, according to military sources, prompted security personnel to mount heavy surveillance on the city and its environs. Also, hundreds of youth volunteers popularly called Civilian JTF were seen patrolling the city and conducting stop-and-search at short distances within the metropolis.
Daily Sun also observed unusual traffic in most parts of the city yesterday evening, a development which some youth volunteers attributed to the scare over the Mule attacks. “Didn’t you hear there was explosion around Mule today (Tuesday)?” a volunteer queried, adding that people were apprehensive.
“We have to reintroduce this stop-and-search measure to ensure the insurgents do not sneak explosive devices into the state capital,” the volunteer said.
Neither the army authorities nor the Police in Maiduguri were ready to provide details of the attack.
